Ross Featherston

Headmaster, С»Æ¹Ï×ÊÔ´Õ¾

At our start of Term 2 Professional Learning day, our staff were asked to consider the role of creativity in learning and how creativity can align with our commitment to having a culture of high performance.

Integrating creativity into the learning process is an ongoing point of focus for us as that it prompts students to think outside the box and develop a sense of ownership over their learning.

By valuing creativity, we as educators can help nurture adaptable learners capable of innovating and thriving in an ever-changing world.

I also wanted to update you on the strategic review of the APS Sport program. As a member of the APS Steering Sub-Committee leading the review, I’m pleased to report that there has been strong interest and engagement in the project from APS students, schools and the broader community. An update is available for you to read here.

Finally, as I mentioned in my video to the community earlier this week, the 2024 Annual Giving Appeal will support our Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship.

We hope to raise $300,000 on our Giving Day, Tuesday 14 May, bringing us closer to our $10M target. I hope you will join me in .

Have a great weekend.

Deputy Headmaster, Head of Secondary School

This year we continue to ensure that our students have opportunities to engage with our sister school, Firbank Grammar. On Monday our Year 7 students ventured down the road after school for a fun afternoon of trivia. This was enjoyed by all and we look forward to the many more planned activities throughout the year.

Yesterday a large number of our students from all year levels participated in the Melbourne University Maths Competition. It is really encouraging to see so many students taking on these challenges. I look forward to hearing how they place.

Congratulations to these students who were awarded Summer Sports Colours at yesterday’s assembly and to the 2024 Winter Sports Captains who were also announced in assembly yesterday.

Thank you to all who attended the Semester 1 Music Concert on Tuesday night. It was wonderful for the boys to get such a show of support. Many thanks to our music Captain Jackson Chen and Vice Captains Ethan Rowe and Elliot Tay for leading this event. We also wish our musicians well with the upcoming Generations in Jazz this weekend. Many thanks to the staff supporting this event.

Happenings and Reminders

  • Mother’s Day Chapels: Years 7-8 on 8 May, Years 9-12 on 15 May.
  • Please ensure you follow all road safety rules when dropping and collecting your children – noting that parking inspectors are often taking photos of people stopping in no standing zones.
  • Watch Dr Ray Swann having a W.A.I.L. of a time as he shares What Am I Learning this week.

Latin Scholars Tour

During the recent Easter Break, 21 BGS students from Years 9 to 12 and three BGS staff spent the Term 1 holidays in Italy (the Bay of Naples and Rome) for the inaugural BGS Latin Scholars Tour.

Translating original Latin passages was certainly the academic focus of the tour: an experience enhanced by visiting many significant Ancient Roman sites where many of the events within the studied texts actually occurred. This combination provided invaluable first-hand experiential learning for our students.

Throughout the full 17 days, the tour was greatly aided by our travel guide, Lehman, who, as a full-time Classics scholar, provided much enthusiasm and expertise. Read Robert Hayward’s report for more details.

Annual Giving Appeal

The BGS Annual Giving Appeal will take place on Tuesday 14 May. All funds raised will go towards our Beyond Tomorrow campaign in support of our Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship.  We invite all students to participate in casual clothes on this day for a $2 donation.

Year 7 Trivia Night

Year 7s were invited to join Firbank Grammar students this week in a game of Funky Bunch Trivia. The boys and girls joined forces to compete in trivia rounds that tested their knowledge of music, pop culture, as well as the history of these two great schools.

This fun evening was enjoyed by all and was a great way for the two schools to socialise and work together as a team.

Golf Success

С»Æ¹Ï×ÊÔ´Õ¾ has continued to demonstrate high performance on the golf course at the AGSV/APS/BAS Invitational Boys Golf Championships with consecutive team victories in 2022 and 2023. In the 2024 championship, held at Spring Valley Golf Club on Monday 29 April, the school was represented by an exceptional team: Rupert Toomey and Woody Aldridge (both Year 11), Eddie Tong (Year 10) and Zane Li (Year 9).

While the team didn’t take home the trophy this year, a special mention goes to Rupert Toomey for his individual success winning the individual stroke play tournament with a one-shot victory, scoring a two-under the card 69!

From Reverend Waterhouse

I recently realised I had not received any emails to my home email address for about five days.

After a phone call to Telstra, I understood that my webmail storage had finally reached full capacity: 10 gigabytes.

What was curious is that for those few days, I did not miss receiving no emails. In fact, it was somewhat cathartic not having to deal with spam, subscription messages or other urgent communiques.

We live in a frenetically-paced culture where we are pressured to respond immediately to correspondence, to incessantly worry about world affairs beyond our control and to always be mentally processing social media activity. It easily leads us to feel either overwhelmed or despairing over our lack of time.

In his letter to the Philippian church, the apostle Paul gives us the antidote: ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.’ [4:6].

During this Eastertide season, if you would like to explore the Christian hope further, I commend to you the various churches in the
